At the Kitakyushu International Association, we offer the following consultation services for foreign residents. All of these consultations are free of charge. Pleased be assured that your privacy will be respected.

General Consultation

Consultation Service for Foreigners
Here we help to solve any problems or worries that foreign residents may have with life in Japan, or that Japanese people may be having in relation to foreign citizens, by providing important information and links to specific organizations. The consultations are carried out by native level speakers from a number of countries, who have received regular training for the position.

Specialized Consultation

Free Consultation for Foreigners
We hold three types of consultation meeting - Consultation concerning Immigration Procedures, Psychological Counselling and Legal Consultation - once per month, free of charge. For more information on the dates of these consultations, please see the schedule. If you wish to make a reservation, please contact us by E-mail or telephone. You can also make reservations from the Enquiries page.

Consultation Concerning Immigration Procedures
An administrative specialist will be available to consult over procedures such as changing status of residence, period of stay, re-entry procedures, naturalization, alien registration, international marriage and other such issues.
Languages: Japanese (if you make a reservation we can organize for an interpreter for you)
Date: Third Sunday of each month. 13:00 - 16:00
Reservation: Not required (those needing an interpreter must make a reservation)

Psychological Counselling
A clinical psychologist is available for consultation on issues such as homesickness, culture shock, anxiety, marriage and relationship problems, as well as other lifestyle issues such as lack of sleep, appetite and motivation.
Languages: Japanese (if you make a reservation we can organize for an interpreter for you)
Date: Fourth Saturday of each month. 09:30 - 12:30
Reservation: Required (three places available, first come first served basis)

Legal Consultation
A lawyer is available to give advice on issues such as work problems, traffic accidents, residence, marriage, divorce and other problems.
Languages: Japanese (if you make a reservation we can organize for an interpreter for you)
Date: Fourth Saturday of each month. 13:30 - 16:30
Reservation: Required (three places available, first come first served basis)

Dispatching Administrative Interpreters

Administrative interpreters are available to help foreign residents who have difficulty understanding Japanese, by accompanying them to places such as ward offices and schools and offering assistance with various procedures. Please click here for more information.

Foreign Exchange Student Services

There are a large number of foreign students studying in Kitakyushu. Below are some of the support activities that we are involved in at the Kitakyushu International Association.

Exchange Student Support Fund

So that the foreign exchange students in Kitakyushu can have a productive and fruitful time here, the K.I.A. collects numerous generous contributions, in support of local exchange students, from local residents and businesses. These contributions are then put towards a variety of support activities, including the Home Visit Program.

Exchange Student Home Visit Program

Japanese families from the local area become a "Kitakyushu Mother or Father" to an exchange student, and over the course of the year support the student emotionally by helping them through any problems they may have with the language, culture, or lifestyle in Japan. This program is recommended for any exchange students who wish to spend more time with Japanese people, want Japanese people to learn more about their native countries, or who are looking for people to support them when they feel lonely, or have problems.

- Application (for exchange students)
In spring (around March) and autumn (around September) each year, we accept applications from people looking for host families. First of all, please contact the department in charge of exchange students at your University. That department will then send your application to us at the Kitakyushu International Association.

- The process after application
After receiving your application at the Kitakyushu International Association, we will seek to match you with a host family based on your applications, and will then contact you again through your University. Once we have determined who your host family will be, we will then introduce you to each-other. After that, it is then up to you to discuss with your host family the dates for your home visit and activities together. Even if you are not able to meet your host family, you can still stay in contact by telephone or e-mail.

Sekihara Kitakyushu Dalian Exchange Student Scholarship

Fee paying university exchange students that study in Kitakyushu City, and who were born in Dalian, China, will be eligible for this scholarship. Up to 4 students will receive this scholarship of 20,000yen per month for a period of one year.

Exchange Students Japanese Speech Contest

The Kitakyushu International Association holds a Japanese Speech Contest for exchange students studying or living in Kitakyushu, in December every year. This contest is a chance for the students to show the audience the fruits of their labour in learning the Japanese language.

Provision of Second Hand Bicycles

A service to provide bicycles, through various universities, to exchange students who are in need of one.

Cinemas Admission Discount

Exchange students, upon presentation of their student card and alien registration card at the cashier, will receive a discount off the usual price of a movie ticket. (This usually brings the price down from 1800yen to 1000yen.)
