Foreigner Support Services at the K.I.A

These free counseling and legal consultation services are offered as a service provided by the Kitakyushu International Service and require an appointment. Each individual session occurs only once a month. For this months' designated dates please refer to our Support Services Calendar and email or phone the K.I.A. for an appointment. Alternatively, you may choose to register for an appointment online through our Contact Us page.

Free Counseling

A clinical psychologist will counsel people who have difficulties of dealing with relationships, cultural differences, and mental well-being etc. There is a limit of three applicants per consultation period. Held between 9:30 - 12:30 on the fourth Saturday of every month.

Free Legal Consultation

A lawyer from the Kitakyushu Branch of the Fukuoka Bar Association will be available to address issues such as rights in the workplace, housing, marriage, divorce, and naturalization, etc. A limit of three applicants for each consultation period. Held between 13:30 - 16:30 on the fourth Saturday of every month.

Free Legal consultation (Immigration, Visas)

Administrative procedure specialists (Gyoseishoshi)will counsel people who want to know about changing their visa status, extension of stay, getting a re-entry permit, changing residence status, naturalization, registration, international marriage, nationality, etc. English interpreters are available and confidentiality is assured. Between 13:00 and 16:00 on the third Sunday of every month. Appointments are only necessary if an interpreter is needed.

Foreign Exchange Student Services

Over the past 5 years in particular, the number of foreign exchange students studying in Kitakyushu has risen dramatically. In order to make sure that these students are able to focus on their studies whilst here, the Kitakyushu International Association is dedicated to providing a number of related support services. Some examples of the support that the K.I.A. is providing are listed below.

Exchange Student Support Fund
So that the ever-increasing numbers of foreign exchange students in Kitakyushu can have a productive and fruitful life, K.I.A. collects numerous generous contributions, in support of local exchange students, from local residents and businesses.

Exchange Student Home Visit Program
Volunteers from the local area become a “Kitakyushu Mother or Father” to the exchange student and over the course of the year support the student emotionally by helping them through any problems they may have with the language, culture or differing customs of Japan. The process for recruiting volunteers to be a family to support the students throughout the year there are more than 50 homes involved in the project. Events and seminars associated with this program also occur throughout the year.

Sekihara Kitakyushu Dalian Exchange Student Scholarship
Those fee paying university exchange students that study in Kitakyushu City, Who were born in Dalian, China, will be eligible for this scholarship. Up to 4 students will receive momentary supports up to 20,000yen per month for one year. For details on the selection process please contact the K.I.A.

Exchange Students Japanese Speech Contest
The Kitakyushu International Association, holds a Japanese Speech Contest for those exchange students studying or living in Kitakyushu. This contest gives those students a chance to present to an audience the fruits of their labor in learning the Japanese language.

Provision of Second Hand Bicycles
This is a service to provide bicycles, through various universities to those exchange students who are in need of one.

Cinemas Admission Discount
Exchange students, upon presentation of their student card and alien registration card at the cashier, will receive a discount off the usual price of an adult movie ticket. (This usually brings the price from 1500yen down to 1000yen.)
